Welcome to Milatos Village
in Lasithi -Crete
Milatos is
a small village built upon the ruins of the ancient
city of Militos. It is situated on the North
coast of Crete , 40 km from N.Kazantzakis
airport in Heraclion and approximately 25 km from
the port of Agios Nikolaos in Lasithi. It has been
officialy characterized as a traditional village
because of its many stonemade little houses and its
narrow stonepaved streets.which maintain an atmosphere
from the past.
The Traditional Milatos: Because
of the small number of the hotels and tourist shops found
in Milatos, the village has not lost its traditional
and authentic
sense. there are various fish taverns alongside the sealine
, offering realy fresh fish , fished by the local fishermen
but it is not only fish that one can eat there. They also
offer traditional greek food like mousaka , souvlaki
, stifado ,
stuffed vegetables etc..as well as steak , schnitsel , pizza
, pasta etc.
In Milatos beach there
are two mini markets, one rent-a-car company and
one internet –cafe-bar. In a distance of ~
5 km there is a pharmacy in the nearby village of
Sissi.
In Milatos there are three beaches one of which is sandy, while there are two
more sandy beaches in a distance less than 5 km from Milatos.
The historical
cave of Milatos is located 2 km away
from the village. Inside the cave in 1823 approximatelly
3000 men , women and children died from suffocation when
the Turcish soultan Chasan discovered their hiding place
and set them on fire. In a short time after he fell off his
horse and died too. The cave is very deep and has many entrances.
Today there is a small church built inside.
